Teledyne Continental Motors and CenTex Aerospace has joined forces to bring you such a system, FADEC for your Cirrus SR22 and the SR22 GTS.
So, what exactly is FADEC? FADEC is a system consisting of three "electronic control units" (ECUs), and related accessories that control all aspects of engine operation.
The Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) System continuously monitors and controls ignition timing and fuel mixture/delivery/injection as an integrated control system. The FADEC System monitors engine-operating conditions (crankshaft speed and position, manifold pressure, and induction air temperature) and then automatically adjusts fuel-to-air ratio and ignition timing to attain optimum engine performance at any given power setting.
As a result, engines equipped with the FADEC System have no magnetos or manual mixture control. This microprocessor-based system controls ignition timing for engine starting and varies timing with respect to engine speed and manifold pressure.
The FADEC System is able to withstand extremes and operate at the same capacity as a non-FADEC-equipped engine in extreme heat, cold, and high humidity environments.
As a monitoring device, the system performs self-diagnostics to determine overall system status and conveys this information to the pilot on the control panel .

The FADEC System provides control during both normal operating conditions and fault conditions. In the event of loss of primary electrical power, FADEC automatically selects one of several backup electrical power sources and seamlessly continues to operate the engine.

We would like to say a few things about the engine and installation into our aircraft. Operationally I can say it starts great cold or hot and runs very smooth even with the four point mount. We like the Powerlink controls and find it's operation to be intuitive and easy to understand. Oil consumption is minimal and it runs strong. There are absolutely no leaks what so ever.
The fact that Continental Motors sent their representative out from Mobile was a great confidence booster and showed continuity and good will between the two companies involved in the modification.
We appreciated Greg Barnes and the CenTex crew for easy access and personal attention to detail and their very professional test flights to make sure the aircraft was safe. The systems were well explained before delivery and the familiarization flight CenTex provided gave me the confidence to fly home without the need for any further instruction.
The engine was delivered in our opinion on time and exactly to the quoted price... with no surprises. The craftsmanship of the CenTex workers was excellent, friendly, smart, and left "no battle damage” behind. We felt confident our money was safe throughout the purchasing process for both the engine and the installation.
We believe the FADEC system makes sense and explored all options at overhaul time including, rebuilding it ourselves, having it rebuilt, and felt this modification was the most cost effective, added the most value to our investment and was by far the safest thing to do.
We now enjoy flying our Cirrus with our heads outside the cockpit. We found the leaning and necessary adjusting of the engines fuel mixture to be tiresome and never ending.
